As the Advocate for Technology and Innovation for the City of Toronto, I attended, with my Chief of Staff, the Cities Forum 2023 in Torino, Italy. The conference was held in March, 2023. Additional meetings were also arranged with other Torino government officials. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the return flight to Toronto was missed which required the booking of an additional flight and an extra night's accommodation in Italy. This resulted in the overall cost of the trip for both myself and my Chief of Staff to exceed $7.0 thousand. Pursuant to the Constituency Services and Office Budget Policy, travel expenses over $7.0 thousand must be approved by City Council. The expenses will be paid out of my Constituency Services and Office Budget.

In June 2020, City Council received a petition signed by close to 14,000 individuals calling for Dundas Street to be renamed, citing its namesake Henry Dundas’ role in delaying the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. In July 2021, City Council voted to rename Dundas Street (2021.EX25.1). Council directed the City Manager to convene a Community Advisory Committee to develop a shortlist of new names for Dundas Street and other City-owned assets bearing the Dundas name, and a transition plan to support impacted residents and businesses. A 20-person Recognition Review Community Advisory Committee (CAC) convening Black and Indigenous leaders, along with other diverse residents and business owners living and working along Dundas Street, was formed in fall 2021. Members were recruited through the City’s Confronting Anti-Black Racism Unit and the Indigenous Affairs Office, in partnership with City Councillors representing wards that include Dundas Street. The membership of the CAC represents a broad spectrum of leaders from Toronto’s Indigenous, Black and equity-deserving communities. The CAC met regularly over the past two years, with a brief hiatus over the mu…

Metrolinx has advised the continued operation of the Manse Road at-grade crossing in its current state has been assessed by its safety division as an unacceptable risk to the railway and the public that may traverse the crossing. To address these safety concerns, on November 23rd, without letting residents know in advance, Metrolinx began sounding the whistle as the GO trains approach the at-grade crossing at the intersection of Manse Road and Copperfield Road. The train whistles are disruptive and alarming for local residents, and during peak commuting times, is nearly constant. Metrolinx has requested the City of Toronto to implement safety improvements related to signage, lighting and removal of brush to improve the safety of their crossing. City staff are working as quickly as possible to conduct this work on behalf of Metrolinx. Recognizing the immense disturbance the whistles have on the community, this motion is to request that Metrolinx post a safety worker 24/7 at the crossing, if necessary, to observe and ensure safety so that the whistles can stop. This would provide relief to the community from the disruptive whistle noise as the City of Toronto works through Metrolinx…

At its meeting of November 8 and 9, 2023, City Council adopted Item EX9.3 – “Generational Transformation of Toronto’s Housing System to Urgently Build More Affordable Homes ”, which outlined the urgent need for new and enhanced government investments to strengthen and shift the housing system to increase the supply of public and non-profit owned homes. These homes are critical to adequately address the unmet housing needs of low- and moderate-income households. A key federal program that has supported the City and the Indigenous and non-profit sectors to create new deeply affordable supportive housing is the federal Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI). The RHI program provides up to 100% capital grant funding towards the costs to build or acquire and renovate properties to create net new affordable and supportive rental homes for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. With almost $440 million in federal investments over Phases One and Two of the RHI program, the City has been able to accelerate the delivery of almost 1,100 new homes to successfully move people out of homelessness. As part of Budget 2022, the Government of Canada announced Phase Three of…

Addressing Toronto, Ontario and Canada’s housing crisis demands urgent action and new investments from all orders of government. It also requires a range of approaches and partnerships across all sectors focused on increasing housing supply, protecting existing homes and improving housing stability for residents. In terms of new supply, the City of Toronto recognizes that a range of new homes is needed across the full housing continuum to reduce pressures throughout the entire housing system, improve housing affordability and access, particularly for lower and middle-income households, and to support growth. In December 2022, City Council adopted the Housing Action Plan 2022-2026 (Housing Action Plan), which focuses on enabling both market, non-market and mixed income housing production in order to achieve or exceed the provincial housing target of 285,000 new homes over the next 10 years. Acknowledging that more specific and targeted approaches are needed to address the unmet housing needs of low-and-moderate-income households, at its meeting of November 8 and 9, 2023, City Council adopted Item EX9.3 – “Generational Transformation of Toronto’s Housing Syst…
